Part 7 of this series on talking about sin using Revelation 21:8, which is partially repeated in 22:15 (those without). Following is the verse from different translations as well as the direct Greek translation. This list does not comprise all sin, it’s a short list, please take the time to study other lists as well that are found in both the Old and New testaments. NO sin: one or many, small or big, can come into the presence of God (heaven): it is Jesus’ blood that takes away our sin and allows us to come before God.
— But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. — Revelation 21:8 (KJV)
— But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. — Revelation 21:8 (NIV)
— Direct Greek
— tois de deilois kai apistois kai ebdelugmenois kai phoneusin kai pornois kai pharmakois kai eidololatrais kai pasin tois pseudesi to meros auton en te limne te kaiomene puri kai theio, ho estin ho thanatos ho deuteros. — Direct Greek with Roman-lettering
Continuing on with the next one on the list is: all liars. From the direct Greek text, the words are “πᾶσιν τοῖς ψευδέσιν/pasin tois pseudesi” which is translated to: all liars.
God is very clear here when he uses the word “all”; ALL liars. People try to wiggle their way out of a lot of scripture saying “it’s up to interpretation”, but there’s no wiggle room here for interpretation as it clearly says “all”.
Not following exactly what God said is what cost Saul his kingdom. Samuel gave him clear instructions, another “all”, from God, but Saul decided there was wiggle room for a good cause.
11 It repenteth me [God] that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments…
13 I [Saul talking to Samuel] have performed the commandment of the LORD.
14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. …
18 [Samuel speaking] the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD [He literally did not, but was so convinced that he did], and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
— 1 Samuel 15
Now, while this post is focused on liars, please take the time to read about Saul’s rise and fall. Pay close attention to all of 1 Samuel 15, namely when it comes to how God feels about his commandments. Neither your interpretations nor excuses like “I thought that” or “I did it with good intent” outweigh God’s will.
So, “all” in “all liars” includes little white lies, lies to not hurt someone’s feelings, lies with the intent to “help” someone or “do good”; they are all lies.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. — John 14:6
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. — John 14:17
Last, I resent people who say everyone lies. God is truth and He hates a liar: his children do not lie! If you call yourself a Christian and go around lying, then the former is a lie: you are not of Christ.
“All liars” is very clear and there is no wiggle room with it. Because of that, people cannot justify their behavior, so some people get very angry and indignant when you point this part of the passage out. However, I did not write Revelation 21:8; it was written long before you or I, so don’t get angry with the messenger.
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
